There is no denying the fact that Winter has arrived in Berlin, the cold that cuts to your bones, the fact that everyone is getting sick, the days where the sun never seems to rise. Fear not though because for all of the elements of Winter that are not so wonderful there is no denying that food and drink are much more fun this time of year.
Naturally we have brewed up a little special something for these long winter nights, a Lebkuchen Beer! For anyone who is not familiar with Lebkuchen it is a traditional German winter cookie. Similar to Gingerbread in many ways and traditionally including ingredients such as cinnamon, cloves, anise, cardamom, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, candied lemon and orange peels. The Lebkuchen has been a traditional winter speciality for close to 800 years in Germany particularly in the south and allegedly has its roots in the Monasteries of Belgium and Franconia.
You can taste this delicious beer this weekend at our very own Bergschloss before the full release next week. If you dont get a chance this weekend, here is our Brewmaster Richie’s description just to whet your appetite:
“In Germany, Christmas cookies or Weihnachtsgebäck in German, are strongly associated with the Christmas season and a favorite among natives and tourists alike. One of the most well known types of these cookies is the Nuernberger Lebkuchen. We’ve dedicate this beer to the almighty god of Christmas cookies in Germany, the Lebkuchen.
Our winter elixir, “Lebkuchen”, pours up a deep red- mahogany hue and is crowned by an off-white creamy head. A gentle and balanced bouquet of eight exotic spices, orange peel, caramel malts, and molasses flows from the glass and leads one to believe that they are sitting in grandma’s kitchen during the holidays. Diving into Lebkuchen with the first sip one finds a medium-bodied spiced ale that balances the sweetness of belgian specialty malts against a gentle bitterness from the German noble hop, Perle. The flavours of eight exotic spices, dried fruits, caramel, and molasses mingle on the tongue and bring back memories of Christmas past while it’s 6,5% alc. help insure that the holidays this year will also be more enjoyable than ever. Happy holidays and cheers from your Berliner Berg Team!”
We wanted to bring a some seasonal cheer to some taps around the city and also wanted to reference a bit of German history at the same time. This beer will only be available in limited quantities and exclusively from draught in selected bars around the city, we are delighted to present this one off brew to bring a little light and warmth to these cold dark nights.
